To date, 2 cycles of 3 training sessions (each lasting one week) have been completed combining theory, personal experience of therapists and supervision concerning the groups of patients followed at the Mental Health Department of the Hospital Center University of Kigali (DSM/CHUK). It was a cycle of sensitization to group dynamics. In view of the interest aroused, we have set up a training course for trainers of group leaders, with the support of the SDC. The first cycle, which began in October 2015, will end in March 2016. The training was open to employees from neighboring partner countries of the SDC's regional psychosocial programme, Burundi (2 participants) and South Kivu (1 participant).

This involves, through the training developed by the AMSR, strengthening the skills of mental health professionals and psycho-social collaborators, working directly with the traumatized population of Rwanda, by developing training in the field of of group. The aim is to allow group leaders to better understand, to integrate the different movements in the groups they lead, to feel more at ease by increasing their theoretical knowledge and to be able to share their experiences through supervisions. This training will also allow them to get to know each other better in the context of group animation and the place they can occupy in it. This training introduces professionals to global management of the person, ranging from environmental aspects, social to intrapsychic aspects. The group dynamic reinforces the existing care modalities which will thus make it possible to adjust the care projects to the historical and cultural particularities of Rwanda, Burundi and South Kivu.

The group discussion is a preferred “care” modality, currently used by several categories of professionals involved in the field of mental health in Rwanda. Whether these groups take place in the community or in healthcare settings, this practice has long demonstrated its effectiveness. But for group leaders, it demands a lot from an emotional and personal point of view. These employees are often trained, then poured into the professional circuits, often without any system or with weak systems in terms of supervision and retraining or continuing education. It is currently recognized that in order for them to continue their work, it is necessary that they maintain themselves in a stream of formation that will provide them with theoretical knowledge (to be linked with their practice) and a space of supervision that will allow them to digest the emotional impact received by them during the groups, now from this way their thinking. To mastergroup facilitation therefore becomes a necessary tool. The space of supervision, common to the various leaders of the group, working in the community or in the care, will make it possible to establish for all (leaders and participants) a network of mutual aid. Currently, aid is often fragmented, which hinders an overall vision of the support to be provided to the population.

The project's objectives

Improve the theoretical knowledge of group leaders by making them aware of the unconscious aspects (tus) of the group, aspects that influence group dynamics.
Create a therapeutic community by offering a space for sharing theoretical knowledge and experiences as well as intervisions for group leaders.
Allow traumatized populations to be more integrated into a social and psycho-social network. This integration is a way of fighting against the stigmatization of suffering populations.

Description of the project

Each training cycle includes 3 sessions. Sessions include:

Immersion in a discussion group. This represents the professional's personal experience in a small discussion group allowing him to live the experience of being a participant, while linking him to the theory.
A reading seminar with reading and exchanges concerning issues common to the participants:
Reflections on violence
Psycho trauma
Group work techniques, etc.

A conference on group dynamics
group phenomena,
the different forms of groups, etc.

Supervision activities to discuss each other's practices. Supervision of existing groups, preparation for the establishment of new groups, but also a space for ventilation of what everyone experiences in the groups in which they participate.

Each session runs in a similar fashion and targets discussion groups of 8-10 participants.

The set will allow the training of local co-animators who will in turn be able to supervise and train other group animators.
At the end of a cycle, a moment of elaboration, digestion and preparation of the next cycle is necessary in order to better target our teaching. This moment of reflection (48 hours) takes place only between trainers (local facilitators and co-facilitators and Swiss experts).

Target population

Any person leading or wishing to lead groups within the framework of care activities at the level of mental health reference structures, or decentralized mental health services at the level of District hospitals or in any other health service as well as within the framework community support and rehabilitation activities at the community level (councellors). Beneficiaries

The first beneficiaries will be the professionals who have followed the training. They will have more theoretical and practical skills in the field of psychiatry, especially in group work. The personal experience lived during the groups will allow them to be more attentive to the distress of their patients. In this 2nd cycle, 5 local participants will become certified group dynamics trainers and 30 participants will be trained in therapeutic group facilitation.

The second beneficiaries are the patients followed in groups led by trained people. Indeed, being able to express one's suffering, to be heard is essential for these people who are often "on the margins" and stigmatized by society. Belonging to a group is an important first step in social reintegration. These participants will be better surrounded by facilitators with more skills and being themselves caught up in an important societal network, that of a therapeutic community.

Another benefit of the training will be the constitution of a network of group trainers in the Great Lakes Region.
